From considerations of land-space utilization, integrated flood control, landscape modification, environmental enhancement, business-activity adjustment and water resources management, a land restoration planning has been carried out in severely land subsidence areas in Taiwan , including a total area of 1,277.86km2, covering Zhanghwa , Yuen I in, Chaiyi, Tainan and Pingtong Counties. The purpose is to increase value of land utilization and to ensoure sustainable regional development.

The following recommendations were developed as a result of this study:

  • Introduce integrated flood control concept by developing storage pond to reduce peak runoff.
  • Use wet land for water purification
  • Increase ground elevation in populated and flood prone areas
  • Change fresh water aquaculture to seawater aquaculture
  • Reduce ground water pumping by increasing surface water supply
  • Cap illegal wells
